How do you focus a digital camera on a subject, whilst blurring the background?

my sister is trying to learn how you take shots that focus on the subject and somehow manage to blur the background? Ive heard you can only really do it on a digital slr, she has a compact digital camera which is decent, any ideas? pushing up the ISO only makes the pictures noisy

This is the depth of field and its is controlled by the aperture. I don't know if your camera has a manual one ,sounds like it doesn't .

Your sister will have to use the camera in Shutter Priority and set it (the shutter) so the camera will select the widest (f2.8, f3.5) aperture - try 1/250. She should then keep her subject 6 to 8 feet away from the background and she herself should be about the same distance from her subject and use the zoom to compose.

The small sensor of a digicam works against her but what I've suggested should help.

This is controlled by the aperture (f/stop). Use a large aperture (bigger opening, smaller number). Your camera may be able to control this if it has shutter priority mode. Pushing up the ISO is not going to help.

As others have said you need to open up the apeture. If your camera does not allow this try the closeup setting or portrait setting.
