What camera should i buy to take pictures of sports??

i would like to buy a digital SLR camera that takes superb pictures of sports. The main sport i will be shooting is the pole vault, so the camera will need to be able to take pictures fast and many frames per second. any ideas??

A Top-Of-The-Line NIKON庐 Or CANON庐 : http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro...

However, I still believe you get superior images with a good 35mm. film camera and just "Scan' and 'Digitize' your own images.

Been in photography 30+ years

Good-Luck!!

You did not state your budget level. Also, if you have any camera (with lenses) already (as they will be able to work on the new camera). You can spend until your heart contends with the new $5,000 Nikon (that can shoot 9 or so frames a second) or the $4,000 Canon (that can shoot 10 frames a second) but that's just the camera body--no lens. I read that there is a new point and shoot that can do amazingly 60 (and even faster) frames per second but have absolutely no experience with it.

If you have a camera that does not shoot that quickly. You may have to work around its limitations. For example, you may have to (pre-focus) i.e. manually focus (if it doesnt' focus that quickly), and you have to time it well, i.e. watch others go over the pole a few times and figure out when to press the shutter button, and so on.

Do you have a budget? If you are willing to spend a bit more, its worth going for the Canon EOS 40D. With 6.5 frames per second, I'm sure you wont miss the shot you desire.

Many other manufacturers offer DSLR's capable of doing ~3 frames per second, and for some people thats sufficient. Even if you step down to a Canon Rebel XTi or the new XSi (when that releases this month) you should be more than happy with the results. Check out Nikon, and Sony too, they have some attractive DSLR's at great prices.

Any DSLR will do fine. I'd suggest either a Canon or Nikon model with a long enough zoom to bring the action in close.

A DSLR will freeze the action, without the shutterlag that most digital camera have. You'll capture the moment, not the moment after.d

A DSLR will also give you the ability to shoot several shots per second, giving you shots that would otherwise be missed.

Currently you can get a great deal on a Nikon D40 with a Nikon 18-55mm for under $500.

The Nikon 55-200mm VR is available for under $250.

Here's some shots I've taken with a Nikon D50 (6mp) and a D200 (10mp). Without the flexibility of the longer lenses and the rapid response of the DSLR, all these photos would have been impossible.
