Whats the best digital slr camera that isnt too expensive?

Check out the Sony A200 and Pentax K10D. Both have their version of Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body so any lens you use will have that benefit. No need to pay extra for IS with every lens you buy.

You can use every Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985 with the A200 and they will have full functionality. Plus they'll have the advantage of the in-camera IS.

Every Pentax K-mount lens ever made, whether AF or manual focus, can be used on the K10D. There will be some limitations with the manual focus ones though. Of course, any lens you use will have the benefit of the in-camera IS.

Olympus, Fuji, Sigma also have DSLR cameras worth looking at.

A visit to digitalcameraguide.com will be beneficial to you IMO. Pick a price range and read the reviews of cameras in that range and compare the features and benefits of each. Then decide for yourself which one offers the most for your money.

Right now the Nikon D40 with a 18-55mm lens is under $500

The Canon Rebel XTi is a great entry level DSLR... and the price has dropped a lot recently. You can find one for about $600 which is pretty good for a DSLR.
