How can I compress a picture into smaller bytes on jpg?

I got a picture taken a while ago with a digital camera that's 800+ KBs. How can I get that number down to less than 200?

put it in a image edit program and save it with a different compression ratio.... like 25%. Your image quality may not look too good after that though. Test different % until you find acceptable quality. Also you can reduce the number of colors in the image and bits per pixel. Your image editor may (or may not) be able to do this depending on which one you have. try image magick or paint shop pro.

Read it into a graphic program, and when you export it as a jpg, there will usually be an option for changing the size, or quality, which can radically reduce the size.

It's an online image editor that allows you to upload your picture, then change it's dimensions or image quality (both will reduce your file size). When you're done, you can download the finished image to your computer.

To use the tool's file size reduction features:
1. Upload your image from the welcome screen
2. Modify the settings in the "size" or "JPEG Quality" sections based on some of the good suggestions in other answers.
3. Then click on the "new Image" button.
4. Once it has completed processing, you will see the new file size up at the top of the screen in the "Info" section. Continue to modify the image features until you get it under 200k.
5. Click on the "save as..." button in the "file" section.
