How do I turn a .AVI file into a .MPG?

I have a small video clip i took on my digital camera and it was automatically a .AVI file (which i have no idea what that means). I want it to be a .MPG file so I can send it to a friend via email since they are unable to view the video as the .AVI file. It is in a windows media player program. Is there a website that can convert it? Or can I do that at home? Also, how to I change the size of the video to make it smaller screened, and also flip it from vertical to horizontal? THANKS!

- open a file or files (it can work in a batch mode)
- click the Edit button
- click Add... > Transform > Rotate
- set 90
- close the edit window
- selcet output format, for example DVD (AVS Video Converter has DVD burning engine)
- click Convert Now
