QuickTime media player help.. please?

I have a mac that runs on OSX and when i take small video files from my digital camera and move them to my desk top they show up as quicktime files. Then, when i open quicktime and try to open the files it looks like it's going to open and then , nothing. Just a blank screen with the file name on the top. All of the quicktime files work that are on websites like youtube and myspace. Just not my own files. Please HELP
