I was thinking about buying my 4 year old a Fisher Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera. The specs say that the picture resolution is 640 x 480. Is that small? Can I print a standard 6 x 4 photo from that image? Our family camera is an old 2 mega pixel one and I know it says I can print up to A4 size. I don't want to buy this camera if I can't print a decent quality photo. Can anyone tell me? As with any other image size, it depends no the camera as much as the pixel dimensions.
See http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei... This is a 640x480 original from a toy camera. It prints about as it looks here. Lousy.
This one is 640x480 from my cell phone. I've made a 5x7 from it and it's quite acceptable. The thing is, the subject is lacks any detail at all. However, you can see that the general quality of the image is not horrible. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7189769@N04...
Here's another small image that prints okay, but I have actually made the pure image quality WORSE to sort of play up the fact that it's less than spectacular - use the weakness as an asset. It's 447x469 pixels, cropped out of a 640x480. I have a 5x7 print of this on display in my office as part of my "rotating exhibit" and people actually like it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei...
Anyhow........ You can go to 4x6 if you are not looking for stunning quality from some VGA size (which is 640x480), but it depends on the camera. I don't know how the Fisher-Price camera is, but you've got a minute to spare, right? Just do a 4x6 print and see. Bear in mind that you will have to crop off a strip from the top or bottom of your photo to print it 4x6 as the image ratio on 640x480 is 4:3 and not 3:2. 3x5 |
