Sports photography on a budget?

Hi,
I am an amateur photographer who knows his way around cameras and how to capture the moment. the problem is i've never had the purse to move up to a DSLR.

I am now looking to move up to a DSLR and was wondering what some good lenses and cameras would be for shooting in both daylight as well as nighttime (red sox game).

I am leaning a bit more towards the Rebel XTi--can you recommend anylenses and/or cameras for me? thanx

i appreciate the answer, but any specific model?

Well if they will let you in the game with the camera, a zoom lens in a focal length of at least 300mm (70-300mm is only one such lens)
