As for otherthings they can both be ised as a doorstop or paperweight . Both cameras are suitable for sports and art.
The key for shooting sports is being able to change shutter speeds or apertures during the height of action. You may want to go to a camera store and see which camera fits your style of photography. Which camera affords you the most control while the camera is at your eye? Having to remove the camera from your eye to make critical adjustments can limit the number of successful action shots. In any case, I have been shooting aciton photography since the late seventies and to truely catch the peak of action, single shot mode is the way to go. Many times you will find that when shooting in the continuous mode, the shot you really wanted is between the shots the camera captured.
When shooting "art" shots none of the above matters as much, because you are going to be executing more precise control.
Any current Nikon or Canon DSLR will provide you with years of use. Rich is correct.
The most important factor is deciding for yourself which system feels better to you.
Go to your local camera store and try them both out, adjusting the manual and creative modes and shooting pictures on your own memory card you can take home and review on your computer.
I have shot with both throughout my career, and I personally prefer the Canon layout of things (and the full-frame D-SLRs) but this is my preference only.
