How can I get into the sports photography field?

I've been practicing photography as a hobby for approx. 6 years. I would love to work with someone that worked in the sports field so that I might work in that field myself one day.

If you want to become a freelance photographer, then you will need to take great shots and have an expert knowledge. You will need a good portfolio, and treat photography as a lifestyle rather than just a job.
That's because the lifestyle can be very unglamorous and at times you may spend a lot of time in the cold doing nothing except waiting for that exclusive shot to come along.
You should also be opportunist in the sense that you should always have a camera on hand with you wherever you go, in order that you can respond straightaway to that immediate situation that flares up or appears out of nothing, to get the photo first.
To be a freelance you need to be often quite pushy to get the initial in and to sell your first pictures - after that it can get easier.
You also need to try to cultivate relations with your clients and potential clients, from newspapers through to magazines and websites and indeed all sorts of media.
