Will the digital prints be as good as the 35mm prints, also, does a digital camera come with a built-in memory, which you can use to save pictures and upload them to your computer, or must you buy a memory stick for this?
I have $300 total to spend on camera, card, and printer, if that info. helps.
Thanks to all who answer. This is not for poster work, just regular 4X 6 or 5 X 7 prints. Even the low-end digital cameras get pretty good images nowadays. Remember that the quality of a picture also depends on the photographer. ;o)
Most low-end digital cameras have problems taking pictures in low-light conditions. Under good lighting conditions, you can get pretty descent shots with a 6MP camera.
As far as the prints go, it all depends on the size. If you just print a regular 5x7, you won't know the difference.
Don't count on the built-in memory. With a 6MP camera, you probably can get 5-8 pictures on the cameras with some 10Mb built-in memories. For under $20 you can get a 2G SD card nowadays. That will give you enough storage for 100s of pictures.
Also, make sure you get a camera with some sort of image stabilization. It makes a world of difference on the image quality.
So much said, I recently got a Panasonic Lumix FX3 from Costco. It's pretty good. I got a 2GB SD card online from Meritime.com for ~ $16. I am pretty happy with the purchase.
Another good camera is SD600is and the FUJI (I think F30).
I wouldn't recommend buying a photo printer. It will cost you alot in the long run. I use photos.yahoo.com. Just upload the pictures and order prints. pay-per-print. ;o)
I hope I was helpful.

-Arman First is knowing what you are really getting when "they" are talking about MP. Most cameras when you look at the properties of the picture, it will spit out numbers like 2592 x 1944 at 240dpi (5MP) That means that if you take 2592x1944=5038848 or aprox 5 million pix. When it says 240 dpi it actually means 240 PPI or pix per inch.
Most pros will tell you in order to get a "Photo" like photo you wll need 300ppi to get the pixels small enough that the eye can't see them. There are ways of cheating the number, but lets go with that. With all that said, you can take a 5mp photo and it should look "photo" quality at 7x5 or 5x7.
Now for the real numbers. Most High end moniters out there are running at around 100ppi. Thats why when you look at a picture on you moniter that's only a 4x6 or 5x7 at 300ppi it looks much bigger that if you print it out.
The cameras that you will be looking at around $300 will have a little memory in them, but that is for firmware, for the most part. Firmware it basically the operating system in the camera. SO yes you will want to get a memory stick. At least 512. Those will run around $35-$55. |
