How can you change the type of file a video is?

I want to edit a video from a digital camera using windows movie maker. but it doesnt support the file type. how do i change the file type?

you have many file converters to do that , just search in google for a file converter to convert the particular file format to the required file format , ex : .cda to .mp3(whic converts the audio cd tracks in to the mp3 format ) , edit after the conversion , i hope it works out
