Photographing my pumpkin?

Last night, I carved my Halloween pumpkin. It's the face of Spider-Man, with the "lines" on his mask etched out of the pumpkin flesh. So when there's a candle inside, the lines glow. I used some sheets of smoke-colored acetate to make his eyes look more like "goggles". All in all, it looks pretty awesome.

I want to take pictures of it at night, while it's illuminated from within. I'm borrowing a digital camera, but I don't have much experience using digital (I want to be able to email the pictures). Is there a big difference between a digital and a film camera, for taking low-light pictures? For example, should I use a tripod? Can a digital camera's shutter speed be made longer?

I'm also going to photograph the pumpkin using a regular film camera. I know exactly what to do with that...it's the digital part that I'm worried about.

No real difference with digital in this case. You will want to use a tripod, just like with the film camera. Many digital cameras have manual or "B" settings just like a film camera, it depends on the one you have. If it doesn't have manual settings, it'll usually have a "night" or "low-light" setting, so use that.
With either camera, just watch the metering -- if you meter on the lit pumpkin face with dark background all around it, the camera will most likely try to expose for the lit parts, and the rest of it will be under-exposed. If your camera has exposure compensation, then meter and add +1 or +2 EV exposure compensation to what it reads and you'll get better results. The nice thing about digital -- you can see if you got what you wanted right away, and make adjustments if necessary, without having to wait for the film to be developed :)

Good luck.

I would first try taking a pic and judge the pic and see if you need to change the setting you might not have to change the settings and this way if its to bright then you just adjust the brightness most of the time you don't have to change the settings try takeing the pic first view them cause you probably won't have to change anything.

Use a tripod, set your shutter speed a little slow (1/60 or slower), aperture small (larger f number) and use your flash to fill in for details on the pumpkin.

That way you will get the pumpkin's texture, form and color, and the nice warm glow from inside won't overpower the picture.

Experiment with different settings until you get one that looks right.

It really depends on the camera. Most point and shoot digitals will shoot longer exposures but not as long as an SLR. A tripod will be a big help.
