Help on basic digital cameras Lingo :Focus ,aperture and ISO?

can you tell me in lay man terms the key words of a camera (digital camera)
1. ISO settings when to use high setting , when to use low.. how does it work
2. Aperture range F2.8 - F4.8 what does this mean
3. Zoom wide 35 mm , waht is the mm thing what if low , what if high

I had a 2 mp camera..
now i want ot go for a cannon s2 is or better

ISO - set a high number in dark conditions and a low number in bright conditions. Generally, you can set "auto" and let the camera do it for you.

Aperture - Forget about it. it's the diameter of the lens opening. Leave it on "auto" and the camera will choose. There are things you can do with aperture, but it is so complicated on most small cameras to change, that it's not worth it.

The mm thing is the focal length of the lens. This is another piece of information that you can discard. Just zoom in or zoom out until you have the framing that you want and take the picture.

ALL of these terms are actually very important when you start to advance in photography, but judging by your question, you're not to that point yet. Just have fun taking pictures. Pay attention to what might have happened when things go wrong. Think, "I wonder how I could have gotten this to work in low light..." Then you may remember that ISO has something to do with that and you'll look it up in the user's manual and figure it out from there.

My daughter has had an S2 IS since August (not long...) and she absolutely loves it. She also has a 2 MP camera, which she now considers a toy. You'd likethe S2 or the S3, but I think you can get good deals on the S2 now. Report It

All of the terms you mentioned are actually carry-over terms from 35mm film cameras. Some are easily explained on both digital and film. ISO however, was really meant for film. It was a measure of the light sensitivity of the film. Faster for low light and slower for bright light. There are inherent drawbacks to going to faster ISO speeds in both digital and film although, they aren't as pronounced as they used to be. My suggestion would be to look up the info you want to learn on film photography first and then you will have a working knowledge as to how that affects digital.
