Are there any simple point-and-click digital cameras? My old one takes 1-2 seconds for the flash to work.?

There must be a digital camera that is simple to use and one that captures the picture as soon as you press the button. Life seemed much simplier when I just pressed the button on the 35mm and it took the picture with automatic focus and immediate capture on film.

Good definition from the link provided by one answer:
Lag time is the time between you pressing the shutter release button and the camera actually taking the shot. This delay varies quite a bit between camera models, and used to be the biggest drawback of digital photography. The latest digital cameras, especially the prosumer and professional SLR's have virtually no lag times and react in the same way as conventional film cameras, even in burst mode. Only not ready to spend a lot of money for no lag times, so some is acceptable.

What you are experiencing is shutter lag - as explained here:

Most digital cameras have some shutter lag to some degree...some lot more than others. You can shorten the lag time by pressing the shutter button halfway when you compose your photo - then when you fully depress the shutter button, you'll find that the photo is taken almost right-away.

My digital takes a while to flash too.. but it's because i have the red-eye reduction on. Check that on yours. If you take it off, the carmera should take the pic right away.

At 1-2 seconds of lag with flash on you should be happy. Even film cameras with builtin flashes take similar time. If you have a more powerful power source (4 AA instead of 2 or better Li-ion battery), you may get more snaps between flash recharges.

Digital SLRs have no appreciable lag in shutter response.

Prepare to pay for the instantaneous response, though, at least $600 for the cheapest DSLR.
