Can I user a higher memory card than my camera recommends?

My Vivitar digital camera says I should use a 256mb memory card. However, a friend has a 512mb card I can borrow. Can I use the 512mb without any problems (and just get the same amount of pictures as a 256mb, I presume)?

Thanks!

Typically what happens is that the instrument (your camera in this instance) will only see a certain amount of memory, regardless of the size of the card. So you are right. You would only have 256mb available to use. It won't hurt anything. It just means that you can only use half of the available memory.
