What does digital ELPH mean?

I see a lot of compact digital cameras advertised as using Digiatl ELPH

The ELPH (also known as IXUS in some markets) is Canon's range of ultra-slim, compact and beautifully designed Point-and-shoot cameras.
The ELPH/IXUS series of cameras combine excruciatingly beautiful designs with slimness, ease of use, and portability. These cameras are also equipped with bigger LCDs for batter framing.
