I have a digital video camera and I want to hook it up to a DVD recorder will I get the same image quality?

I tried hooking the DV camera to my computer and capturing the video directly on my pc. However the video quality varies, sometimes I get an exact copy, other times the picture become pixelated or the video jumps and is not insinc with the audio. If I put the video on a DVD using a DVD recorder then put the DVD in the computer will I be able to download the video and edit it with the same video quality as the orginal?

Using a DVD recorder is 'analog" video transfer, and will not be sharp and clear, compared to directly streaming it to your PC.

Your video quality may vary, due to the format of capturing. If you capture a video with anything less than a non-compressed raw AVI, you will be capturing a "Variable BitRate" (VBR) video, which will cause the variations of video quality that you have described.

You need to look carefully at the software settings in you computer's video capturing program.

I have a few programs for capturing video and my favorite is Ulead's Video Capture.

The most probable settings that you should start with are:
1. "Capture Plug-in" = DirectShow
2. "Device Control" = MS 1394 Device Control
3. "DV Type" = 1
4. "Capture Template" = NTSC DVD (U.S.A.)
5. Saved as a Raw Non-Compressed AVI

Those settings above are the basics for capturing the best quality video possible from your device, to your PC.

Playback will be choppy on a slow computer (that is expected), so you need to convert that huge AVI file to an MPEG-2 file for DVD burning. The MPEG-2 file will play back smooth on the PC.

If you need to edit the video, then edit the non-compressed AVI, then convert that to the MPEG-2

probably. might even be better.

It will probably be more complicated.
When you record a DVD you will have VOB files and to edit these in your computer you go back to step 1, you have to either capture them to your computer via capture card or look for a VOB file converter, install it and use it accordingly.
Post with your question your camera brand and model, your PC configuration, (IEEE1394 port or another capture card) and the editing software available in your machine, so we can give better ideas on how to proceed.
