Sony Digital camera

Canon and Sony are GREAT

one that has a high MP EG. 10mp and also one that has a good opticle zoom EG.10x

Well, I received a Kodak digital camera a acouple Christmases ago so, I think it's a pretty suitable camera. It comes with a memory chip or card and is priced reasonably. Also, you can go to Best Buy and just look to see what kind of cameras they have at a reasonable price.

stick with the major brands. Start simple, some of those cameras out there are very complicated. Many people end up buying a camera with a bunch of features that they will never use! I personally own a Nikon, but any of the other major brands are very similar.

i have a canon and love it

Sony CyberShot is a really good camera if you like to take pictures inside or outside. It doesn't have to many buttons so it is easy to use. It has a long range zoom on it and you can turn the flash off and on and it costs around $189. It also has a big screen so you can see the pictures really well.

Kodak Easy Share. I love this camera and it's simple to use. We took it to the Grand Canyon and got some great pictures.

stick with nikon, sony, or canon. go for the most megapixels and best optical zoom you can afford. And get the largest memory card your budget can afford. The card your camera comes with doesn't hold too many pictures.

No matter what you do, adjust the settings for the size of the image (3x5, 4x6, 5x7, etc) and sharpness (normal, fine, superfine). If you set the camera for the middle sharpness and about a 4x6 picture, you will get many more pics on your card and will get a picture that will make you happy. The only time you might need the highest settings (which take up more memory) is if you want an image with super detail.

Sorry if this goes over and beyond your initial question, but it doesn't do much good buying a camera if you get annoyed because you can't take a lot of pictures with your memory card.

You have a great list of important "wants"! However, many digital camera buyers often overlook some critical features such as making sure they buy OPTICAL zoom, not just "the most zoom" (digital zoom degrades pictures by interspersing more "data" into the picture resulting in less sharo pictures). Also, 10 MP is BS... it's not how many MP you buy as much as it is how FAST will the CPU recover, i.e., time between camera "clicks" or lag--if you want to shoot a sequence of pictures, you want a camera that does that well, not just capture a lot of data (pixels).

Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for being a 10 MP camera.

I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.

The A620 was rated about twice as good as any as far a battery life. I hope the A630 and A640 are just as good. Use Energizer e2 LITHIUM batteries and you will be happy with battery life.

With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera.

If you want a sleek, smaller camera that will easily fit in your pocket, consider the Canon Powershot SD600. It gives up some of the features of the A630 and 640, but at least it still has an optical viewfinder.

If you want to trim the budget a little, the Canon Powershot A430, A530 or A540, are all great choices. You will need a decent memory card, though. I'd say get at least 512 MB.

a canon or an olympus

I just bought an Olympus Fe-190 which included internal memory, rechargeable batteries, and all the hookups you need. It does video, action shots, and is easy to use. It was $199.99 about 3 weeks ago. May be cheaper now. I also got a 1G memory card for about 40 bucks more. Try it out.
