I intend on using it for everyday photos. Children at play, family shots, vacation, and kids playing in sports. I am an amature when it comes to operating cameras. Would like features so I don't get a lot of blurred pics and have a good zoom. Also looking for simplicity. Most printed pics will be 4 x 6. Price under $1000.00 I have read many reviews. Tired of reading about things I didn't understand. Good quality and simplicity was my goal, not just a point and shoot. I purchased the Nikon D40, cost was $400, included a lens, card, and other accessories. Wish me luck. Thanks for the advice. For sports, you can't do better than a DSLR. Even the DSLR cameras have auto settings that will give you very pleasing results. For under $1000, there are several suggestions.

By the way, $1000 would by you the D40, a couple of lenses, and nice flash as well. For a midsize go for Canon Powershot IS5 or if you want a pocket able one is Canon Powershot SD850 or A710IS
check www.dpreview.com for details & reviews. If most of your prints will be 4X6 and shots of family, vacation, children etc. why are you willing to spend $1000-?
That kind of money are DSLRS.
My suggestion:
My camera. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2. 6 megapixels, 12X optical zoom, image stabilizer, very good on AA rechargeable batteries, only 1 second delay between shots, comes with battery charger and bottom line, will give an excellent 8X10 print. In addition to auto has manual controls if you care to use them.
Equally as good are Canon PowerShot S2 IS
5 megapixels, 12X optical zoom and
Fujifilm FinePix S5200. 5 megapixels, 10X optical zoom.
An excellent camera without lots of zoom would be the Canon PowerShot A630. 4X optical zoom, 8 megapixels. Will give you an excellent 8X10, has manual controls + auto, very good on AA rechargeables. According to Website dpreview.com Beach Camera has it for $182- my suggestion
