5 megapixel digital cameras, are they worth it?

I just want to put pictures up on the internet and e-mail, I heard their are 1 megapixel camera are used for that, but I don't want the quality to be really blurry. I'm looking into the $12 Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P100 Digital Camera, it has 5 megpixel. My pictures won't be blurred if put on my 9 by 10 screen? thanks!

Look at it this way; some day you might want to make prints! What if you take an awesome shot that you want on your wall? I love printing and framing my photos.

And more megapixels means something else too! You can crop smaller, without losing clarity. That's important no matter what you do with your photos.

I think it's worth it. If you want to wait, though, megapixels just keep going up. Those 5 MP cameras will get cheaper in time.

Go for the 5 . You will be glad you did

The average computer screen these days is run at 1024x 768. This equates to 0.835 of a megapixel. It is not the megapixels that matter here but more the overall optical quality of the camera. That is the reason to buy a good camera. 5 Megapixels roughly approaches the quality of 35mm ASA100 film, so that is a nice amount of megapixels. Obviously a Nikon D70 at only 6 MP will produce a much nicer photo because of higher quality components, manufacture, and lens.

This camera should be more than adequate for your purposes. It will still do nicely if you should decide you want to do more than you think you do right now.

5mp is overkill for internet usage. If you use the full 5mp image at full memory, the image will load on other peoples computer at a turtles pace, forget trying to look at the image if you only have 56k. Now if you want to print the images to a larger format like 8x10, 11x14, or little larger then 5mp is the way to go. Go for the cybershot, most likely you will take it on trips and parties and share pictures with others.

a 5 megapixel is more than you need. You will actually have to down size most pictures from a 5 Mega pixel camera for the internet and email. A 5 mega pixel can easily be blown up to bigger than 9x10 and still be extremely Extremely clear.
