Can anyone recommend a good digital camera for a very young, budding photographer?

My daughter is 7 years old and really wants a digital camera? I let her use mine occasionally and she has a knack for taking pictures (even at 7). I want to encourage her but don't know what a good camera is for this age. I also don't want to spend an enormous amount of money.

Try someting small but has a lot of Mp. Look at the Canon A- series.

I have always used canons...they are not difficult.

However, the people in Best Buy told me the easiest ones to use are the Kodak digital cameras. They are usually cheapier and not as high quality as other brands. But it would probably be good for a seven year old plus you can buy one of the Kodak easy share printers and just hook the camera up to that to print.

I have found that circuitcity has some for younger folks.

digital camera GUIDE
be sure to check titles on the left side
the guide should answer your questions

The best would probably be something relatively small and sturdy. Preferably without a lens that moves in and out of it's case. I assume your daughter wouldn't be taking it to school but mostly using it when you're around.

In the cheaper price range, I'd say that the Nikon COOLPIX L10 5MP or the Olympus FE-210 7.1MP are both good choices. They are both about $150, which is probably the lowest you should go if you want a camera that takes decent pictures. The larger number of megapixels isn't necessarily better quality.

For someone who is really interested in photography, I would go for something a bit more expensive, in the $250 range, and I think that the Kodak EasyShare Z710 7.1MP is absolutely the best choice there. One of the reasons I like it is because of it's shape :) It actually looks like one of those old style cameras with the big lens. The lens on this one is simply outstanding and it has a very large focus range which means that she can take great very close up shots.

Generally, the bigger the lens, the better the pictures will be. Things like megapixels don't matter much unless you want to make huge prints. For regular size prints, even 3 megapixels makes great images. Seven megapixel images you can use for a poster :P

I hope that helps.

My first choice for you would be on the cheap. Fujifilm FinePix A500. Shutter speed goes to 1/1500 of a second according to Website dpreview.com Has 5 megapixels, 3X optical zoom, has viewfinder,and takes AA rechargeable batteries. Price is somewhere between $80 and $100-
A fine choice as one of your answerers answered is the Nikon CoolPix L6. 6 megapixels, 3X optical zoom and excellent on battery life.

I'm asssuming you mean a ppint and shoot camera not an SLR(real camera).
Casio Z75 is a great choice, nice and thin, lightweight, shoots photos and video with sound. Easy to use controls and a 2.5" screen to view.

Recommmend a Scandisk memory card, about 2GB
Check you Sunday paper for ad sales or coupons.

Even though I personally own this camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
4. It's very small and light;
5. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;
6. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
7. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
8. And the price is a mere $120 [sold at Samy's Camera - www.samys.com, and Staples.com.]

Good luck!
