Which digital camera suits me the best?

I need a new digital camera. I would be using it for MANY photos of my 1 year old as well as inside events. My current digital camera takes a long time in between photos. You cant get every shot you need because the camera isn't ready as fast as you are. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your problem is called "shutter lag" and is common to many digital cameras. It is caused by the time that it takes for the cameras processor to respond to pressing the shutter release, focus the camera, calculate & set the exposure and fire the shutter.

What I would suggest you do is look at web sites that evaluate various cameras and compare models in your price range. Look for models that have very low "shutter lag" or "shutter delay". A good place to start would be Steve's Digicams (Link below) because it has many reviews of popular models at many levels and prices. His evaluations usually mention what the shutter lag time was in tests. It also has sections to do comparison shopping and links to other sites.

I hope this helps! Good luck

You should get the PENTAX Optio W30. This camera may not be exactly what you are looking for as far as shutter lag goes but it has TONS of features, VERY good picture quality, its sleek & stylish. And to add to all that, its waterproof! You can see the camera here: http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/pr...
I have had the PENTAX Optio W10 (a slighty older version) for a few years now and I absoloutly LOVE it!

I'm gonna have to suggest a dSLR in your case. Think of it as this way basically: are you willing to lose photo opportunities with your 1-year old by getting a point-&-shoot which will almost always take time to ready itself for your next shot?

Get an entry-level dSLR with image stabilization built in (in this case you've got the choice of either a Pentax K100 or K10, the Sony A100, Olympus e510). Image stabilization will increase your chances of getting good, sharp photos in low light while the little guy (or girl) moves around in front of the camera.

You could also look at Nikon or Canon dSLRs BUT they don't have in-body image stabilization... you'd have to buy specific stabilized lenses to get that, and you'll just end up paying dearly for them.

I believe for about $500 you could get one of the above-mentioned dSLR models with a standard kit lens, which should take care of your issues, produce superior quality images without shutter delays, and give you the flexibility to expand your camera system if you ever wanted to.

Happy snapping! :)

Even though I personally own this ultra compact camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time - 300 shots per set of rechargeables;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
4. It's very small and light;
5. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;
6. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
7. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
8. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
9. And the price is a mere $119 [sold at Samy's Camera - www.samys.com, and Staples.com; $99 at amazon.com]

Good luck!
