While I love Nikon cameras, I'd suggest the Canon A620. We did a lot of shopping while trying to stay in the under $400 range and this is exactly what we bought for our adult son before he went on a trip to Europe. For that money, you can get the camera and a one gigabyte memory card. The A620 lets you control everything, if you know how, or it takes great shots in several automatic modes. This has been the Comcast Shopping Top Choice for months now. It uses "AA" batteries, too.

Don't buy a Canon..big time junk....I'd suggest a Sony W-30..

You do not specify if you want interchangable lens etc, or if you are familiar with mega pixels. The higher the mp the better. If you want a point and shoot there are many many on the market within your budget. If you want a more professional rig, there are some great deals on ebay for olympus evolt systems. Use a sniping system and decide how much you are willing to bid, and be patient. The evolt 300 is somewhat cheaper than the e500 which I got that way. Pictures I took with mine can be viewed at http://www.silvaspoon.net

Spend some time online researching the features of a digital camera and what they mean. There are many things to consider and grasp before you make the big purchase.

For example:

1) Digital Zoom vs. Optical Zoom

2) Megapixels: What do the numbers represent? Is a higher number better and why?

3) Types of storage.

4) Will it take movies as well? Does it produce movies w/audio?

5) Can you add accessories (e.g., additional lenses, external flash, etc.)?

6) How reliable is the brand and model I wish to purchase?

There are many things to contemplate before you buy a digital camera. Give yourself every advantage. The nice thing is you don't need to hurry as prices continue to drop.

Gizmo is right about Sony. Excellent digital cameras.

I have a Kodak DX-6490. Good camera, but should have made sure it had image stabilization. It helps to steady the shot especially if you have a camera with a high optical zoom rating (mine is 10X). Without the stabilization the images can get blurry at the higher zoom rating due to minor movements by you.

Take your time and good luck.

I have owned 2 sony digital cameras and I could not reccomend them more. I just got the second, the sony N1. It is 450$ though. If I were you I would get the sony t9 (I think that's what it's called).

A good all around digital camera size is the compact. It is not too small to create difficulties with use and not too big to be bulky. You don't need to spend $400.00 to get an excellent camera.

I think one of the best all around cameras is the Canon PowerShot SD500 it is 2.25 x 3.5 x 1.00 inches and weighs a meer 6oz.

7.4 megapixils; View screen a large 2.5 inches; 3x opitcal - 4x digital; 5 photo effects like b/w,sepia,vivid,neutral and low color effects; has audio/vidio cabability with built in mic: 32 bit built in memory; pic bridge for easy print making; ELPH techology for high speed usb data transfer; up to 3 min movie clips (it's not a camcorder). A very good all around digital camera with ELPH technolgy functions I didn't even mention. I highly recommend this model, it's one of the newest out.

You can buy this camera at "beachcamera.com" for $289.00 including shipping. Read up on it and check for different prices. Beach is an approved supplier with a 41/2 star rating from consumers. I would buy this camera if I didn't have a digital already......good luck
