I have a Sony digital camera. In what conditions should the flash setting be used, indoors, outdoors, etc.?

Photos were coming out too dark. I was told to change the ISO to 400. Was using it in the automatic mode.

for indoor pic use the indoor type n for outdoor use outdoor type
and for more set the aperture and shutter speed
