What should I know about ISO on a Digital Camera?

Im trying to learn to use my digital camera in dark settings w/o using the flash, for those experts out there. what is the ISO and what should I set it to for optimum results?

You can shoot at night without flash at any ISO setting if you have the option of leaving the shutter open for as long as you want. Just remember, the higher the ISO setting, the more grainy, or noisy, your image will be. Since you didn't indicate your subject, or how it would be lighted (you will need some sort of light or you will not get an image), it's difficult to predict how long the exposure should be at any given aperature. I suggest a remote shutter release and a very stable tripod and doing a little research on the net to get an idea of how long. Then bracket (plus and minus stops) around the suggested exposures you find for your subject. Good luck and expect to take many shots to get what you are looking for.

low iso, less sensitive to light

high iso, more sensitive to light

shoot sunny days at 100 or 200 iso

shoot night w/o flash at the highest iso possible. I shot a football game on saturday at 1600.
