What you're doing seems to be fine. What exactly do you want to know? You can use either a video camera, webcam or digital camera to do stop motion. A camcorder or webcam would be the easiest to use, since they are easily recognized by frame-grabber stop motion software. Digital cameras have a sh itload of problems when it comes to stop motion. They can be overcome, but you need to be aware of them.

You should check out this site:

http://www.stopmotionaniamtion.com

it's a message board frequented by stop motion animators who help eachother out. They even have a handbook section with general info on a bunch of topics.

If you're looking for a program to compile your still photos into a movie, give Monkeyjam a try. It's free.

Here are some resources on the basic principles of animation. These principles are just as important in stop motion as they are in 2D animation.
