Camera settings to take picture of fish tank?????

What kind of camera setting do people use to take pics of their tanks?

I either get a flash reflection or if I turn the flash off the picture is dark and most of the time blurry.

I have a 7.2 MP camera I would think I should be able to get something decent.

Your camera can have 16mp. If it doesn't have a lot of options, you're SOL. It also depends a bit on what brand of camera you're using and when it was purchased new. The features are updated often.

My new Canon has a water setting. For you, try using no flash and turn the macro option on. This allows you to take the clearest pictures up close (since zoom and normal modes are optimized for different distances). Also, if you've got stability control, make sure it's activated or on automatic. Try setting up a hard surface (like stacked books) to rest the camera, since turning the flash off typically lends itself to blurrier pictures. This has to do with the shutter speed and the fact that people don't have steady hands. Don't worry about that.

If your pictures are turning out darker than you'd like, adjust the white balance. Check your ISO speed also. The higher, the better. Above 1200 is preferable in general so 1600 should be enough for capturing moving fish.

if you are going to use flash, you have to make sure that you take the picture at anangle so the reflection will not wash out your picture. also, if it's up close you should decrease the flash intensity if your camera has the feature. it is better not to use the flash but you have to provide sufficient lights to get a good exposure, using the night mode might result in grainy quality also, at night mode, the aperture(shutter opening) is large andexposure speed is slow. at this setting, it is very hard toget a decentpicture of a moving object because the fish will appear as a streak. youneed toset your camera on manual focus too, so that the focus is on the fish and not on everything else but. summary, set up lots of light if possible, do not shoot at perpendicular to avoid taking a picture of yourself reflected. or you could set up a blind with an opening for the camera lens. use manual focus if available to get as sharp an image as possible and i use the flash since with the extralights the fish wont get that big of a start and the flash helps freeze the image. i thinki get pretty decent picsof course they're not professional quality but hey, i'm happy. btw my camera is a banged up Canon G3 w/ 4MP.
Oh yeah,i use a tripod and i focus on a predetermined spot and wait for the fish to go there before i snap the shutter.excuse my typing, i have a sticky spacebar.

Don't use flashlight and tune the volume shutter off as you may afraid the fish you are taking as some fish like discus will change its body black or duller when afraid and some fish may hide when noticing threat.

I often use speed mode some said sport mode to capture the photo of my beautiful fish as a memories.

As most fish are active so great speed are in use here.

Hope my answer may help you to take a nice photos of your beautiful fishes.

Good luck :p

Check if your camera has an underwater setting. Mine is 10.1 MP and it has a bunch of different settings. It doesn't flash when I take a picture on that setting. If you don't have an underwater setting, try taking pictures of bright tanks, with no flash, and fast shutter speed.

If your camera has a night mode, use this.

If not see if it has manual apature adjustment (brightness you might call it).

Never use your flash, it stuns the fish, and the photos are crap.
