How do I use firewire to take footage off my mini dv video camera?

I bought a mini dv video camera, and it has both a USB and firewire jack on it. When I connect USB, I can only take off the still pictures I took on the camera, and was told I need a IE 1394 (firewire) cable. So i went out and bought one, and when I hook it up to my camera and laptop.....nothing happens. What do I need to do? What setting should the camera be on? What am I doing wrong?? Thanks

The camcorder should be switched to "Play", but you don't always get a pop-up telling you it's been connected. If Windows Movie Maker can't see the camcorder, try this:-

Go into Device Manager (Control Panel / System / Hardware)
Expand the IEEE1394 Bus host controllers, right click on your device and uninstall it. If it's not there to start with, you've got a problem!
Shut down your laptop
Connect the camcorder, switch it to play and reboot your laptop. You should see messages coming up as the card and then the camcorder are detected.

Use windows movie maker to CAPTURE the footage (no drag and dropping Mini DV videos).

If that doesn't work, put it in play mode as a troubleshoot.
