Is Bristol a nice city to live in? |
We're moving. My wife and I are wedding photographers and are planning to set up our business in Bristol. We'd like to live in a nice quiet, safe area with good public transport, cheap housing (if there's such a thing) and things to do/see. Interested in hiking, photography, nature, art and history. Bristol has a poor public transport system (it has been bad for decades) and is prone to considerable traffic congestion. Parking in the city centre is expensive and difficult. The Council Tax is ridiculous and many of the planning decisions seem absurd (look at the monstrosities which were built in the 60's and are still there). The police force is so tied up with Political Correctness that they're virtually useless at dealling with 'bog standard' community crime like vandalism, car theft and burglary etc. Most of this is down to a very badly run council that seems determined to spend taxpayers' money on things like "<choose your race>-<choose your pc cause>-committees etc." inststead of resurfacing the roads and pavements. Now the good bits. It is (in places) a stunningly beautiful city and has a remarkable history. It's the home of the Great Western Railway (the real one not the First Group's crappy organisation) and in some places it truly "Brunel Town". It is perfectly located on trade routes. The scenery around Bristol in North Somerset and the Severn Valley is some of the best there is. There are a lot of entertainment, eating and drinking places of very high quality. The cultural scene is good. All this is in spite of the abysmal Labour council, not because of them. I really Really Really suggest that you should look to living in the outskirts or better still, one of the satellite villages or small towns. Try Almondsbury, Pilning, Coalpit Heath, Keynesham (pronounced Kaynsham). For your leisure activities these would be a better base. For demographics, facilities, crime, property prices etc please look at Up My Street.com Source(s): I grew up in a suburb. http://www.upmystreet.com/l/bristol.html... |
