Wedding Photography...?

I got a quote on a photographer, but I think I can knock down the price by $1,000. Since I am a teacher and my future wife is a graphic designer we were thinking about having the photographer take the photos and send them to us and then we can do the editing, display, etc. Thoughts??? Also, what are some good sites on getting a wedding book published?

Consider HOW you are going to get the prints made. Will they be archival quality so that your grandchildren will have something to look at?

Hey, if money is that tight and you can't cut out the stretch Hummer limosine, go ahead and ask. Just be SURE that you are not closing the door on asking the photographer to provide a full set of prints at some future date. You should expect that set of prints or album to cost more than $1,000 additional dollars, though, for a couple of reasons. For one, it's going to be a while in the future and everything will cost more in the future. For another, it would be easier for the photographer to do the edits properly if the subject is all still familiar to him or her. To sit down and review the pictures and consider composition, etc., will take some additional time for reacquaintance with the event.
sounds like an idea... may not be possible. But if it is.. sounds great.
In the US the photographer owns the copyrights on your pictures, even though you pay for the shooting and prints. (Check the copyright law if you don't believe me.) If you publish a book without buying the rights, you will be infringing on his/her legal rights and open yourself to a lawsuit.

As for knocking down the price, well, you get what you pay for. If I gave you a bid and you asked for $1000 off, I'd politely ask you to take your biz elsewhere.

You know, in the end the photos are all you will have to remember your wedding day. Why be so cheap? (Hey, are you really gonna save that moldy cake?)
In response to the above two posts over ownership of the images - it depends on where you live, local laws, and the contract you agree on.

In the UK the photographer automatically owns the rights to the photos and you are not allowed to copy them, unless your contract states otherwise. I don't know what the situation is elsewhere.

With that point aside . . . I personally (and I do wedding photography) never give out the RAW image files to clients. This is for two reasons:
First, there is nothing to stop them from printing them off themselves, denying me a huge chunk of my income.

Second, I know how to work up my RAW images to get the best photos possible. Most people don't. Letting others work up my images devalues my work.

I have to agree with the previous post - what's an extra $1,000 for the best memories you will ever have?

PS: I should add that everyone thinks wedding photographers must be raking it in. Think of this, our work is very seasonal, and we can usually only do one wedding per week. It also takes days (and I do mean days) to process our images and supply prints. You see us for only a few hours. The many hours we put in before and after the event goes unseen.
Whoever presses the shutter owns the copyright, unless they legally sign it over to you.

The photogs normally double or triple their rate for releasing the images. If they hand over the images, you'll never buy anything else from them.
