Should i get my associates? |
I would like to start my own wedding photograph and makeup business. I love it! I also have past experience as a spa therapist, and administrative assistant. SO, I never got a degree and have been out of high school for 6 years almost now. Not sure if I should get an associates degree to secure my future. I don't really ever want to work full time, or be an executive or manager. My question is should I got to school, and if I do for what? Def. don't want to go to school for photography, I think I know enough for what I want to do, and am still learning much more from others. I was thinking about either graphics design (since i could use that in ceating my own website, or editing photos) but I could also teach myself. I was also thinking about Business but I don't think I need all the courses.. Liberal Arts? Then again evnthe community college is expensive and if I am going to invest in things for my business I don't know if i could handle all the finances. Ideas? In fields like you're talking about, creative experience means much more than a degree usually. My advice would be to pursue graphic design in school (as that would be the one most likely to impress a variety of people), but at the same time, you should be getting apprenticeships and internships. Work freelance. Get your name out there and build up clips and examples of your work for your business's website. Get it! It never hurts to have education credentials on your resume. I see no need for a degree. I do see utility in taking some additional courses. Don't forget to look at the "continuing ed" offerings there as many times for a reasonable price you can spend a few hours and get some good info and possibly make some good contacts as well. College is VERY expensive and it's getting more so each year. Tuition goes up every year, even if just a little bit. I went to a 4 yr. college so I know all about tuition increases. You don't have to have a degree to be a photographer. If you're already good at it, you may want to read some books to become better. You don't have to have a degree to have your own business either. Just go apply to have an L.L.C. |
