I have my 18 - 55mm (kit) lens on Canon 350D, is that already enough for the wedding coverage (photography)?

Thanks for the tips/sugestions Richard B.

Still waiting for another better, better, better or best answer. : )

The body isn't nearly as important as the lenses.

As someone who has only done a handful of weddings, don't make the same mistake that I did. Don't shoot a wedding with the kit lens and the built in flash. The lens will not allow you to get crisp clear pictures without a flash (indoors) and the flash will wash out faces and create harsh shadows.

If you're hellbent on doing it anyway (DON'T!!!!) at the very least get yourself a 50mm 1.8. This will buy you some leeway when it comes to those shots during the service (when most clergymen aren't going to allow you to use your flash). This lens can be found quite easily for under $100.

I've done a wedding with a kit lens and onboard flash. I had to jack the ISO up to 1600 to get acceptable prints (particularly during the church service), and those prints weren't pretty after they were blown up past an 8X10.

Good luck to you :)

Should do it for most shots except group shots indoors in tight spaces. Some lighting would be helpful. The kit lenses arent really up to pro work.

I've been a wedding photographer for over 20 years so the 18-55mm is okay to get started but I wouldn't say that it is enough to fully cover all shots in a wedding. I shoot a 18-70mm and a 80-200mm but often use a 12-24mm for those wide angle shots. I think an even bigger issue is do you have a back up body in case you have problems with the first body. Wedding photography is critical and equipment does break down so I have at least two of every critical equipment (i.e., body, flash, etc.) to ensure that I can cover the wedding no matter what.

The kit lens is really not ideal for a wedding unless you're basically doing it for free- there are tons of options out there, I give all of my assistants a 50mm f1.4 but you can use a 1.8 if you need it. Think more about the style your going to shoot and then figure out which lens you really want to use- if you arent going to be doing any huge reprints- then don't worry about changing the lens- just work your magic :)

Probably would be tough shooting a wedding with that lens.
A lot of places will not allow flash, and you may not be able to get close enough for that focal length to be enough. Your aperture is not large enough to get primo shots in low lighting conditions without flash.

If you can get close, look at picking up a 50mm f/1.8. If you cannot get close, then see about a 70-200mm f/2.8 and a tripod.

There is more to it than what I said...which is way simplified...but I think you get hte jist that you probably do not have an optimal lens for the work you are looking to do.

Last minute tips:

Shoot with the highest ISO you can
Shoot with the aperture wide open
If you can use flash, use it
If you cannot use flash, try a tripod or monopod

i have been using same lens kit on wedding coverage, the pictures are good only if you have external flash attached. it would be no good if you rely on the built in flash in that type of lens unless the wedding will be shot outdoor on a well lit environment

I would strongly suggest getting a new lens. Not only is the 18-55mm constricting, but it is also not optically sound. You should really consider purchasing a better lens, such as the 10-20mm and the 70-200mm f2.8. These two lenses would make a nice combo. So, the 18-55mm kit could work, but for most shots, it will not be a good choice.

It's fine but it's slow and requires flash a lot more than a faster lens.

With today"s more photojournalistic approach to weddings, I'd invest in a PJ lens, the 17-55 f2.8.

It'll let you shoot in skimpy light (which, face it, is 90% of weddings) at clean ISO and without the issues flash brings with it.

Go and look at Denis Reggie's site to see what I'm talking about:

Just my 2 rupees -- hope this helps.
