Will this lens meter with my nikon d 40?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...

Its a Nikon AF 80-200/2.8 ED The auto focus is not working but I know that wouldn't work anyhow.

I need this for doing some inside shooting (usually wedding) and I don't have a whole lot of $ to dish out as of yet.

What do you think? I just need to know if it will meter with my d40. I need the 2.8 fixed aperture for natural light settings of course.

If this does not.... Does anyone have a lens or know where I can get one just like this inexpensively? Please let me know. THANKS!

I currently have the 18-55mm kit lens as well as the 55-200mm VR. Not sure if the VR works... anybody know a good way to test it? I seem to get crap pictures with it at 200mm... they are all blurry now matter what... actually it usually is better without VR on.

Anyway I need to have a fixed aperture lens that can do at least 2.8 if not lower for low light with still having a decent shutter speed.

OK the first poster has no clue. ANY Nikon AF lens made since 1986 will meter with your D40. Type 'G' only indicates the lens is missing an aperture ring making them incompatible with OLDER cameras.

Also, the aftermarket lenses he mentions are crap, they could damage your cameras electronics and put undue wear on your camera's lens mount: I once had an old Minolta that came with an aftermarket lens, and it's mount was so worn down from the poor quality lenses, genuine Minolta lenses fit so loose they wobbled when mounted. Also aftermarket lenses have awful resale value.

Not likely. You definitely won't get full function TTL metering. You really need a "G" lens for full function.

Best option is go aftermarket, Tamron or Sigma, still won't be cheap but less than Nikon glass - not as crisp, either, but until you can afford the real thing, most people won't know the difference.

I wish people know what there talking about before answering question.
Yes this lens will meter with the D40, and yes full TTL, just no distance information data transmitted to the camera.

just $100 more you can have a brand new 55-200mm Nikon lens that work perfectly on your D40 . This is AF-S lens that design to use on the D40. And believe this lens will last as long as you own your D40

Brian is correct

Yes any AF nikkor lens will meter just fine. And to correct the next guy, Tamron and Sigma lenses are not crap, they have 2 series. The economy line (which is just that, a price point lense). and Tamrons SP/Sigma EX series which will produce nearly identical shots as their counterparts, but without the price tag.

My general consesus, if it's less then a 20% difference in price tag I do like the manufactures glass, but for 4x the price, I'd concider other options. eg Tamrons XR DI SP 28-75 f2.8 typically sells $400 USD and Nikons 24-70 F2.8 is in the $1800 USD range.

Hmmmm... Ok if the extra 24mm is imortant to me then yes, I'd favor the nikon, but I have shot that tamron myself, and thats a sharp lens.
