Is the song "Turning Japanese" insensitive to racial stereotypes? |
The implication is that if you're into photography you must be Japanese because we always see them walking around with cameras around their necks. http://www.energyexpressband.com/lyrics/... Becky's right that "Turning Japanese" refers to the facial expressions men make while they are pleasuring themselves. But the implication that squinting one's eyes makes someone look like an Asian is offensive, just like "dumb blonde", "dirty Italian" or "drunken Indian" are. How would you feel if "having brown eyes" meant you ate dog poo off a plate? Mostly these phrases are meant in jest, so righteous indignation isn't called for, but perhaps a little more sensitivity would help the world. Besides, maybe some Japanese do like the idea that their features represent masturbation. I know it would make me feel good to know some women appreciated me that much. But using stereotypes to show that you like something isn't the best way to go about it. uhm no, it's about masturbation, or that's the old rumor. funny haha No, Alphaville did that song years ago and my take on it was it was about partying. Nothing offensive about the Japanese people. =) |
