Photography Students (esp. in SoCal), if you were willing to do a wedding, what would you charge? |
My sister is on a limited budget for her wedding, and wants to have someone do her photography, but doesn't know anyone. In San Diego, all the people we have found are $900 bucks and up, so I was curious, are there any photography students out there that have or would do weddings, and if there are, how much did you or would you charge for full-day wedding coverage, and letting them have copies of all the prints? Remember - you get what you pay for. If they have a limited photo budget - they should consider some nice studio portraits of the bride and groom (and even the wedding party) either a few days before or a few days after (depending on how strict they are on the tradition of the groom not seeing the brides dress). They might also consider scheduling an on location portrait shoot right after the ceremony. I've done this - I show up with portable lights, shoot formals and leave. This can most likely be done at moderate cost. They wll be happy with some high quality shots like this and I can tell you from personal experience, that 20 years later they will be glad they did so. If they insist on hiring a photographer and paying very little - they should prepare themselves for the worst - using up the little budget they have and being disappointed with the results. Shooting weddings is hard work and doing them well takes a whole bunch of different skills ranging from pyschology to photography. It may look easy - but I can tell you - again from experience - it is one of the most demanding types of photography and requires proper skill, equipment and planning to do well. Don't take pictures of anyones wedding unless you have prior experience in the business and KNOW what you are doing. Your wedding day is without a doubt the most important day in your life and you don't want to trust it to just anyone who owns a fancy camera and "claims" they know what they are doing with it. A professional model camera is just a tool of the trade us professionals use to create our artwork. Unless you have the knowledge and skill on HOW to use this sophicated equipment it is just a bunch of expensive photographic equipment that remains useless. If you are very short on money to spend for your own wedding, I suggest you find someone who has the following items to show you before you sign any contract. 1.) A portfolio of his/her own work of past weddings they have photographed. 2.) A list of clients names and phone numbers who they have worked for and who were happy with the quality of the students work. 3.) Any professional photographers whom the student has worked for in the past who can attest to the photographic skills the student possesses as a qualified wedding photographer. I have heard of so many brides and grooms who were so unhappy with the quality of the work the photographer who they hired to shoot their wedding. It is best to look at the persons photographs VERY CLOSELY of previous weddings they did before signing any contract with them. I heard of stories where the student the couple hired didn't even bother to show up on the day of the wedding. good luck I am a former professional wedding photographer. Now I only shoot artsy stuff.
