Does having your own wedding photography business give you more time to take vacations? |
or is it hard? It doesn't matter what kind of bussiness you have, if you are running your own business you basically have to choose between making money and having free time. While not photographic in focus (I do some photography in conjunction with my home based business) I have been my own boss for about 10 years now. I love not working for someone else, but the down side is that when I take time away from the business I stop earning an income. Running you own business is great, but if you're looking at starting up a wedding photography business so you have more vacation time available, you might want to reconsider. As I heard someone once put it, "I don't run a small buinsess; I have a small business that runs me." Well you could have more vacations but they would probably not be when you want them. :) Your vacation time is definitely going to be seasonal. Consider that the summer months are packed with weddings, and almost all weddings are on weekends. If you're just starting out, expect to work a lot and have very little time for yourself let alone vacations. Once your business is well established, you will be able to make time when you need a week or two. I take my vacations in February and March when business is slow. You've got to ask yourself 2 questions: 1. When is wedding photography at it's peak? 2. When am I willing to take my vacation? I planned to go to Colorado for Thanksgiving. This week I had to turn down 2 weddings during my vacation, one being on my son's birthday (Nov 25). I had to go at this time because of an ill grandfather who has Alzheimers. Don't plan on being able to do things on weekends. You're weddings will take up your weekends. And more than likely some big holidays. When just starting out, you will need to be available for any and all weddings that will come your way, until you make a name for yourself. |
